The Best Travel Coffee Cups for 2023

The Best Travel Coffee Cups for 2023
There was once a time in my life when I would pick up a £2 travel mug from B&M and be on my way, now there's nothing wrong with the £2 travel mug but when you treat drinking coffee as a leisurely activity like I do they just don't hit the spot. In fact, I've found it very hard to get a travel mug that's 100% perfect, so I set out to test and review some of the most popular mugs on the market to report back on which I think is best.

For this, the mugs have been rated in a few categories - aesthetics, is it leak proof, dishwasher and microwave safe, how long the coffee stays warm, how easy it is to clean, if it fits in a standard car cup holder, and any additional features.

(Some mugs were gifted but my opinions are my own)

SHO Pacto - £12.99

Size - 12oz/360ml

Aesthetics: I love the design of this. You will have probably seen something similar online but the short tumbler is a change in design to traditional travel mugs.
Does it leak: Yes, you cannot completely close the lid (the drinking hole is always open).
Does it stay warm: Yes, I tested it with boiling water and after four hours it was still hot and after eight hours it was still warm.
How easy to clean: Yes, this was the easiest of all the mugs to clean.
Does it fit in the car: No
Dishwasher/microwave safe: No
Additional features: Can be used with cold drinks i.e. wine in the park.

Overall: 8/10 - I've taken away two points for not being leakproof and not fitting in the car but otherwise I love it.

Chillys Series 2 Coffee Cup

Size - 340ml (also available in 500ml)

Aesthetics: This is stunning, it comes in a range of colours and they all look gorgeous (you can mix and match different colours on the website!). I have Frost which is a beautiful pale blue. Every time I use this I am asked where I got it from it doesn't look like a typical travel mug so I'm sometimes asked what it is as well.
Does it leak: No
Does it stay warm: Yes, I tested it with boiling water and after four hours it was warm - you do have to keep the drinking hole open over a certain temperate which has a small impact.
How easy to clean: Super easy, there aren't many nooks and crannies to clean which helps!
Does it fit in the car: Yes
Dishwasher/microwave safe: No
Additional features: It's beautiful! If you're going for aesthetic alone this is the winner.

Overall: 9/10

Stojo Pink - £12.99

Size - 12 oz/355ml

I have had my Stojo since 2019, I loved it when I used to commute into Manchester city centre everyday day as I could rinse it out in the office and it folds away flat to be taken home again.

Aesthetics: I love the look of this and it comes in plenty of different colours so there's sure to be one for you.
Does it leak: You have to make sure you put the lid on completely straight, but it doesn't leak.
Does it stay warm: Not for long, after one hour you could put your finger into the boiling water and it was warm (this was the coldest by the end of the 8 hour test).
How easy to clean: Pretty easy to clean, however, once you have used it for coffee it holds the taste so don't do as I did during the lockdown and try and use it for gin - it was not ideal.
Does it fit in the car: Yes
Dishwasher/microwave safe: yes to both
Additional features: can be folded flat.

Overall: 6/10 - great for those on the go but not the best for keeping your drink warm.

Keep Cup - £22

Size: 340ml

Aesthetics: This also comes in a variety of colours so there will be one for you - I also like that it's clear but it's personal preference.
Does it leak: Yes, the lid isn't completely leakproof (you ouldn't want to tip this!)
Does it stay warm: Not for long, after one hour you could put your finger into the boiling water and it was warm
How easy to clean: Yes, very easy to clean.
Does it fit in the car: Yes
Dishwasher/microwave safe: The website says yes.
Additional features: I got this for James when he began commuting and he still uses it years later so it lasts!

Overall: 6/10

Caroline Gardner Bamboo Travel Mug - Fleur

Size - 400ml

Aestheitcs: Super cute!
Does it leak: Yes, must be kept upright.
Does it stay warm: Not for long, after one hour you could put your finger into the boiling water and it was warm.
How easy to clean: Easy to clean all of the parts come a part including a rubber seal.
Does it fit in the car: Yes
Dishwasher/microwave safe: No
Additional features: None.

Overall: 5/10

Reusable Bamboo Cup with Slide Lid (TK MAXX) - £8.99

Size - 420ml

Aesthetics: I like the aesthetics of this and it's what made me buy it in the first place.
Does it leak: Yes, I found it difficult to drink out of due to the positioning of the hole and ended up with coffee all over me. It does get easier as you get used to it but that fear will not go away!
Does it stay warm: Yes, I can put a drink in this and drive an hour to work and it's still warm. After two hours the boiling water was warm to hot.
How easy to clean: The lid is tricky and never seems to be completely clean due to all the nooks and crannies.
Does it fit in the car: Yes
Dishwasher/microwave safe: No
Additional features: The sliding lid is easy to use and ideal for driving.

Overall: 4/10

Winner

The overall winner of my little experiment is the Chillys Series 2 followed closely by the SHO Pacto. I think I'll keep the Chillys cup for travelling and use the SHO at my desk (I take forever to drink hot drinks so they go cold in normal cups).
